PC4...dead..awts..

My 3 year old rig suddenly died (well, she did give some symptoms of a worn out pc before calling it a day)..last year this unit is hard to power up - you need to switch the power source on and off in order to boot her..

i thought it was the PSU ( change it) and then for a couple of weeks, gave me stable rig again..but today..the problem came back again...this time i could not power it up totally, (done basic troubleshooting..change cable, change power source/psu, swap memory,) to no avail two things left not swapped (processor and mobo)

as don't usually go beyond that point..why? it's not practical..hehe i mean if those two are the remaining part not been tested you have 50/50 chance either mobo or proc...might as well go to a computer center since i will be force to replace it anyway why not give those technician a job..haha (most center offer free installation of mobo or proc)..

i will place my money on motherboard on this one..keep you posted!

UPDATE.. (March 23, 2010)

i as suspected the mobo is dead...just spend 3k for a replacement, deym!

Microsoft's New Icafe Program..smells fishy or money?

today i receive a communication letter from microsoft phils. concerning their new policy on ICafe program (yes we're one of the few who despite financial constraints complied to use legit Os from M$)

here is the frustrating part..

it's very clear that they are excluding home edition Versions of their OS as valid OS for "renting out" in their new program!

oh my! we just bought 9 xp home edition a year ago because they said it is valid as long as we submit IRRA to their office.. (which we did) now as i understand the letter below (scanned and edited - the address line) we are still valid to use the xp home..but for how long?

seems to me that they are forcing us (legit users) to use their new product...
why us! we already complied...they should focus their attention to those illegal icafes lurking around and laughing at us for investing our resource to comply where there is still rampant usage of pirated softwares everywhere.

Cabal (Philippines) Instant Install

here's a good trick:

saves you from installing and patching this popular game..
ideal for those who maintain internet cafes that does not have the time to patch a newly installed game.. (this could be a pain in the **s because of slow connection provided by our well, * cough competent ISPs)

Steps

1. Copy (folder to folder) from a working (patched) cabal PC (default directory C:\program files\e-games\CABAL ONLINE (PH) )

* sometimes after copying the entire game..cabal (find cabal luncher icon on the installation folder )will work instant, else go to step 2 and 3

2. Go the source pc (the pc that have the original working Cabal)
a. click start > run
b. type regedit
c. navigate through this path [ My computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Estsoft]
right click folder and chose export and save (add any filename and save at any shared directory for easy access later )
do the same at the subfolder [My computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Estsoft\CabalOnline]

3. go to the destination PC (the pc that you're installing the game) or where you placed or copied the game access the 2 registry files you just save and merge it (just double click the file)

then lunch cabal... it's been working for me 100% all the time...

*works also for other e-game games like RAN online

Cloning..Haha

*UPDATE ops I did it again...LOL (april 16, 2010 12:30 PM)

The good thing is I device a technique to recognize which is which (source and destination drive)

BEFORE CLONING*
delete the partition of the defective/corrupted drive since you are to clone it anyway, that way you will never be mistaken of choosing which is the source drive since acronis won't allow an empty drive to be the source (clever ha!).

or be very careful of the size of each disk, reformat if you need to to see the difference between a same capacity disk by noting its free space

here is funny experience last week..

problem - PC (as in personal computer) 5 freezes on occasions

diagnose - software related; could be virus infection (someone inserted his thumb drive without scanning it first for malwares/viruses ..arggh

solution - hdd cloning (acronis).. we have 4 identical units..makes sense; fastest and most convenient

outcome - we have now 2 erratic unit! deym..hehe

*baligtad kabayan! - somehow i've mis configured the hdd setting (messing up the source and destination drive big time)..but hey, i checked everything... sata need no jumpers settings.. i booted PC3 properly and installed acronis home edition thier..so i thought i have the correct primary (source) drive..

*take 2 - still has 2 units working properly..haha

* this time i opted for manual configuration (on acronis's drive settings) did not change anything just tick the manual (instead of its automatic - which i have opted last)

walla! - finally :)
